When learning and reading from a foreign language, do you ever truly reach a point where you are not actively translating the words back to yourself in your main language?

Does this ever truly go away, as long as you primarily communicating in your main language each day? I realize everyone is different, I would just love to hear about other peoples' experiences with this!
