When you immersed yourself in a new language how long did it take before you could understand what was being said?

I have a decent background in Spanish and I can form sentences. I get the grammar etc. but now that I’m in Madrid (trying to converse with my family) I’m amazed by how little I can comprehend of what is being said outside of shorts sentences. How long did it take before you felt comfortable in your second language?
