Question about hearing the quick short sounds in a new language?

I have struggled with this in both French and Italian, where sometimes there is a liaison with the short sound, and it's tacked on to either the beginning or ending of a word, and is easy to miss. Does it just take practice to hear these word? for instance there are times I have a hard time hearing era, or a in Italian, and I miss the l' in both languages a good deal. Instead of hearing l'homme, I will just hear homme, or uomo and completely miss the l', or whatever other short sound before the word was.
