How able have you been to make use of a second language you learned without a use in mind for?

Many foreign languages offer a use you don't have to look far for. For instance, Spanish is not only easy to use in the US but often even a practical language in many areas, and if you like literature, tongues like French or Russian open a wealth of classic authors.

If, on the other hand, you want to learn say, Uzbek, weeeeelllll certainly it has its uses, but the honest truth is that most of us are going to have to actively hunt for a way to use it regularly. If nothing else it would be likely to fade quickly, and one might even start to lose motivation.

However, there are a few languages in that second category I'm attracted to the idea of learning. So if you've learned an "Uzbek"-y language and been able to make use of it, I'd love to hear your story.
