I'm considering doing a 7-week summer language program at Middlebury, and I know they take their Language Pledge (to only communicate in your target language, even in your personal life, throughout the program) very seriously. I definitely would want to wholeheartedly take part in the program. However:
- I have therapy once a week (over Zoom). For my sanity, that is not going to change
- Once a week, I call my grandmother. She has dementia and her health is failing, and, if she is still around next summer, I will absolutely not give up the opportunity to call her those 7 weeks
I've heard they expel people from the program for speaking English (without tuition reimbursement, which is kind of nuts). Would I be able to get away with making these calls? I might need a single room accomodation, which would obviously help the matter. Has anyone taken part in a Middlebury summer program? Were you truly expected to never call home etc.? (TL)
