Does anyone else struggle to understand and remember what they read aloud in a TL?

I'm learning French (TL), and when I read a text silently, I can usually understand the story and follow what's happening. But when I read the same text aloud, I tend to focus so much on pronunciation that I lose track of the story.

I might understand almost every word as I read it, but once I finish, I can barely summarize what the text was about. This doesn't happen when I read silently, so I suspect that trying to pronounce everything correctly takes up too much of my attention.

I'd like to practise reading aloud to improve my speaking, but I'm not sure how to approach it if it seems like I can't understand the text properly.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does it get better with practice, as pronunciation becomes more automatic? And if you've dealt with this, what helped you the most?
