Am i doing something wrong? (TL, mainly African languages)
Hi, i (24F) am honestly obsessed with foreign languages, learning them, their history, and the cultures that unite them. I have a very strong passion to break language barriers and be able to communicate world wide. Due to this ive actually gained quite a few penpals and a majority of them reside in Africa. Obviously there is a ton of languages there as they usually speak multiple, but my issue comes in due to my new friend who speaks english, pidgin (Ghana), Twi , and Ewe. I already am a Spanish student and have been learning Swahili but every time he mentions a language he speaks i cant help but dive into them. I want to learn them so bad and for some reason it feels like im doing something wrong? For clarification i am extremely aware of language barriers, respect, etc and would never do something inappropriate or disrespectful to any culture knowingly. I just genuinely am fascinated by the wide variety of languages they speak in Africa and want to be able to communicate easily with others, He hasnt said anything to lead me to believe im doing anything wrong, infact he encourages me to learn his languages. I guess im just scared of saying something inappropriate or insensitive. Any advice on how i can be more confident about this, i also spend alot of time researching these languages to avoid any miscommunication.
For clarification: i need validation that Im not offending anyones culture by attempting to learn, as silly as that sounds. Im in a state where foreign language is not looked highly apon, even as a spanish student i am treated weird for doing schooling for it. so i just get nervous im doing something inappropriate especially because of how many dialects i want to pick up.
