Has anyone with aphantasia successfully learned a second language "for fun", without immersion?

I love grammar and understand it easily, but I can't retain vocabulary to save my life. Flashcards do absolutely nothing, but even learning words in context is like pulling teeth and hard to retain. I'll remember where a particle goes in a sentence and what it means, but I won't remember the actual word. I can't really picture anything in my head, which I suspect makes it harder to connect meaning to the new words long term. I have no problem learning new writing systems though.
