Can understand can't think fast to respond

I'm in hsk1-, lesson 8- my teacher says my pronunciation is excellent ( I do have an accent but not over bearing) I can recognize allot of characters and read off the book / white board. . At the end of Class she talks and I know what she's saying, she asks questions but I can't think fast enough to answer... I can think and recall sentences, and I can recall by looking at English words and saying it in Chinese . What am I missing? I can understand questions but can't respond fast enough... My brain freezes
