Talking in your native language in a foreign country

So everyone talks about the experience of talking your target language in the country where it's spoken, but nobody ever talks about your own native language being understood by others in it. So I went to Belgium to a restaurant with my parents. I ended up talking to them in German. The owners of it ended up talking to us in French and some Italian. Well then I ended up going to the toilet and complained to my dad that it was dirty and you could barely even flush it, because it was broken. The owners have then realised that we're actually from Germany and have spoken a bit of German to us, but didn't really know what was wrong. It was so embarrassing 🥲
