I need advise

I was talking with someone on Tandem, and our chats were very normal. We had been talking for about three months. One day, he said ‘goodnight, do i said goodnight to the cutest chef.’ But honestly, I didn’t mean it in a flirty way. I meant the other meaning of ‘cute,’ which is ‘clever,’ like saying ‘goodnight to the most clever chef.’ Since one of the meanings of ‘cute’ is ‘clever.’ But I think he misunderstood it as flirting and deleted our chat . I’m not sure if it was because I made a mistake or because he didn’t want his girlfriend to see it. The truth is, I admire his way of thinking, and I was considering being friends in real life when I travel to his country, since I’ll be going there in six months. I’d really like to have some friends there. Now I’m hesitant whether I should talk to him again or just leave it. And if I do talk to him, should I explain the original meaning I intended, or will that make me look silly and needy?
