Why are languages from Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, etc so different from Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, etc?

I've always wondered this considering they're neighboring countries (especially Thailand and Malaysia). I know that Malay and Indonesian is very similar and both languages share some words with Filipino (Not sure about Thai and others tho). So how come that linguistic bond didnt stem up north?
