I’m a Vietnamese American who was never taught the language growing up and can only speak English. I put a lot of effort into learning Vietnamese as a kid through Duolingo but that eventually fizzled out as I realized the program wasn’t that helpful. Now as an adult I want to dedicate myself to learning a language fully but I’m having trouble choosing between focusing on Vietnamese or Mandarin. While Viet would be beneficial for connecting with family and my culture, I feel like there is a lot less resources for it and I would struggle more. In comparison with Mandarin, I have a lot of friends who are fluent, there are more resources, and I plan on traveling in China soon. Has anyone had to choose between learning a language closer to their culture vs. another you have a passion for?
