Every time I open these apps, it's the same story. Want to actually talk to someone? "Pay up" Want to find native speakers in your city? "Pay Up" Want to send more messages? "Pay up".
And don't even get me started on how these platforms have turned into pseudo dating apps. The constant stream of flirty/creepy messages and unwanted advances to both women and men is beyond ridiculous. The fact that people even have to deal with this is absurd.
Here's the thing though - I'm done complaining. I've decided to build the platform I wish existed.
I'm calling it Alterity. Yeah, I know another language exchange platform. But hear me out, because this is different. I'm a developer who's sick of watching these platforms turn into soulless money machines and dating apps.
Here's my promise:
Core features stay FREE. Always. No BS message limits. I want to build actual communities. Not just random clunky chat rooms, but real spaces where you can grow, learn, and connect.
Everything gets built in public. Want a feature? Tell me. Think something could work better? Let's discuss it. Spot a problem? Let's fix it. Simple as that.
Look, I'm not naive. I know platforms need money to run. But there's a difference between sustainable monetization and straight up exploitation. I'll introduce thoughtful monetization that actually makes sense and keeps the platform running.
Why am I telling you this now, before it's built? Because I want you in from day one. I want your ideas, your frustrations, your hopes for what this could be. I want to build this with you.
I've got the skills to make this work. But what I need is a community that believes in building something better.
