Can you learn a new language entirely based on the similarity of words to a language you already know? Has anyone tried this method?

Hey! I'm currently learning French, and I've noticed that many words are very similar to English, which makes learning much easier for me. I'm thinking—what if there was a course built around this idea? I’ve found hundreds of similar words between these two languages. Has anyone here used this method?
