🙏 Feedback: Life as an indie is painful haha, but also rewarding. Receiving feedback from language learners about my app, whether or not they'd use it, what's good and what sucks, is extremely helpful for me. 💡Origin: Newcomer started out as a "Language Learning RPG", but I pivoted to focusing heavily on language immersion. There are already RPGs you can play in your target language. While most apps focus on lessons, I take the exact opposite approach and focus on meaningful content and communication.
🗺️ Languages and Difficulties: Newcomer offers the ability to learn and practice English, Spanish, French, and Italian. There are two modes: beginner and intermediate.
🎮Features: There are probably a dozen or so language learning features and I'll outline these below. I hope this can start a conversation about new/modified features you all 🫵 would like to see! As a Newcomer, you're given a phrasebook and a quest to start your journey... View relevant expressions, words, and contexts in your phrasebook Beginner Mode: You will encounter target language speakers and start to communicate using basic phrases... Construct target language sentences one word at a time Intermediate Mode: As an intermediate, you must use your second language to answer questions, learn about the world, and progress... Speak/type to converse with in-game characters and progress Chunk Translation: Your ability to translate chunks of your target language makes it possible to understand your new language... Hand-crafted in-context translations for all beginner mode dialogue Intelligent Translation: You can even utilize intelligent translations which explain individual words in more detail... Receive definition(s) and grammar explanations for any word Conversation Tasks: You start using your new language to complete conversation tasks by discussing a variety of people, places, and things within the world... Communicate with intent to complete conversation tasks Intermediate Mode Typing: You can type messages to characters... Converse freely about the world with in-game characters Intermediate Mode Auto-Correct: Get corrections on your input... Receive auto-corrections on your input Intermediate Mode Speaking: You can also practice speaking to characters... Practice speaking with characters Intermediate Mode Tasks: Complete intermediate and advanced conversation tasks.... Intermediate mode has many more tasks Intermediate Mode Phrasebook: Use your phrasebook to learn new words and phrases... Use your phrasebook to learn new words and phrases Vocab Practice: As you travel through new areas, you review vocabulary by battling hostile creatures... Easy way to explicitly practice vocab by battling creatures Leveling: You level up and unlock new words and phrases, enabling you to engage in deeper and more nuanced conversations... Exploration: Your new language takes you to many parts of the open world... Explore many parts of the world End Game: Ultimately, you must learn your second language to defeat the Dark Crimson... Battle and defeat the bosses that exist in the world Cross-Save: Play and continue the game on PC, iOS, and Android... Play and continue your game on your mobile device Learn multiple languages: Learn many languages at once... 📘Anyways, those are the main features that are in Newcomer.
