Why does google translate suck?

So I use it to save vocabulary on my phone cause it’s fast and easy but the translations for even just one word suck half of the time. Google has zillions of dollars but they can’t get the correct dictionary definition for a popular language? ChatGPT has been more helpful in my experience & it’s a robot as well.
