To those who have studied in degree programs abroad, what is the minimum CEFR level you would recommend?

I'm curious to hear what levels folks started their program at and whether they felt comfortable in an academic environment at that level. I'm currently on the fence about taking a "gap year" to study language abroad before trying to join a degree program.
