I can't learn more than like 10 words a day or my retention the next day is 50% how can I improve.

I always learn new vocan in sets of 8 and I want to get to doing 3 sets a day and being able to remember like atleast 22 the next day. Right now to even remember these 8 I have to study the card atleast 5 times before I go to sleep or I wont remember the next day.
