Why would anyone pay thousands of dollars (looking at you, America), or waste multiple years of their life "learning" a language at university, only to reach a measly B1/B2 level?
I find it mind-boggling that some people actually believe a degree in Modern Languages is useful at all. Here's why:
- In the 4 years it took you to acquire your degree and reach B1/B2 fluency while studying full time, you could've easily done any other degree or worked and self-taught yourself said language and another one to the same or a higher level of fluency.
- Businesses don't care about how you studied French "at the university level", whatever that is meant to be, for 4 years, if you can't actually speak proper French and constantly get confused by French people. As a business owner, in fact, it makes more sense to hire native expats as opposed to "Modern Languages" graduates, which is what anyone can quickly observe at hotels and tourism-oriented companies.
- Anyone can, at any time, get a certificate for those levels without ever stepping foot in university... Japanese Minors could just skip taking said Minor, study on their own, take the N1 test and pass.
