Is duerme la piel a common expression? Is duerme usually used to mean numb?

Hello! Today a customer came in asking for a gel that would make the skin “sleep.” We had trouble understanding what he wanted in English and he pulled up Google translate, which showed he wanted a gel or cream that would “duerme la piel.” I realized he wanted a numbing agent and found the right item for him, but now I’m curious. Is duerme a common way of referring to numbing? What’s the normal usage? Thank you!
