Intonation while reading aloud

I'm looking for advice on how to improve my intonation when I'm read aloud. This is for my native language, but I'm not sure where else to ask.

My main problem is that to intonate properly, I need to know what words are going to come next. But I seem to be incapable of reading ahead of my speech. When I'm speaking, I think I only read one word at time, and that word is the one I'm am speaking. So how am I supposed to accurately intonate a passage that I am reading for the first time?
