When you're terrible at your TL, which would you prefer when first speaking to a native speaker of your TL?

Personally I'm off put by complements about TL proficiency when I know for a fact I'm not great and still have a long ways ahead of me. Of course I understand they're just being nice. During language exchanges I don't really comment on the other persons English at all, and I'm wondering if I should be complementing their English even if it isn't that great, in order to return their complement. Thoughts?
