Why should speaking be saved for a later stage of language learning?

Hey guys,

I’ve come across a few comments now spread throughout various different conversations and threads, where people tend to point out that; one of the biggest misconceptions is that speaking a language is the most effective way to learn early on.

I wanted to know if you guys had any more in-depth explanations in regards to speaking/conversationalism.

The reason why this seems like such a interesting perspective about the speaking aspect, is because anecdotally, I was able to learn English coming from a non English speaking country, and the quickest way I was able to learn, was through nothing but being put in an environment where everyone only speaks English.

Thoughts ?
