OPOL method when you're not fluent

I'm planning on having a child one day and would love it if my child could be trilingual. My partner speaks German fluently and we live in an English speaking country so she's planning on only speaking to our child in German. I am half Indonesian but I'm not fluent in the language. I didn't grow up speaking it and don't have much of a relationship with that side of the family. Ive been learning the language for the past couple of years and I'm around a B1 to B2 level. Would it be worth it for me to try to use the OPOL language or does it only work for fluent or advanced speakers?
