Introspection (and slight question) about my parents' language

I've got a weird understanding of Thai. I can speak Thai, though I am a little shy about using it. I can understand conversational Thai, but the higher academic words I've got tons of problems with and it's a game of guessing definitions for me. I was born and raised abroad so I don't have much experience with on-ground Thai since I don't live in Thailand. Can't read or write Thai either. I understand the news anchor's dialects very well whenever I go to Thailand yet I have some difficulties understanding common vernacular Thai. Anyone have any advise on how can I improve my Thai?
