For those who acquired languages that are not in the same linguistic family as your first language

Hi guys. As a Korean , it is so disappointing to see myself not improving my target language(one of Western countries) as much as my peers whose languages are in the same root as my target language. How did you guys learn your foreign languages( for example, Japanese as American or vice versa)? Any good tips?
