For those learning a language spoken in many regions of the world, how strictly do you focus in on one region?

As someone who is learning Spanish and would really like to sound like / comfortably understand Latin American Spanish (or more specifically Mexican), it's a bit frustrating that the majority of books translated from English into Spanish use more of a European version. It's also a bit strange when you consider that Mexican Spanish or more generally Latin American Spanish has a considerably higher number of native speakers in the world.

My priorities when selecting a book to read normally are - general interest -> Mexican Author -> latin American author. Lately there are a number of books I would like to read that are only available in European Spanish and I wonder if i'm being too strict with my immersion rules.
