Someone I don’t know wrote to me and when introducing themselves, said “Am John by name.” This sounded like it might possibly be a translation of the speaker’s native language—it doesn’t sound like a common way of speaking English. Is this an obvious grammatical pattern to anyone? The person claimed to be know Portuguese.
