Second generation immigrants, what is it like to learn your parents’ language?

I’m curious about the experiences of children of immigrants who grew up speaking English (or some other language besides their parents’ native tongue) and are only later in life getting around to learning the language of their heritage that they were never taught. Do your family members express support for your language learning, or do they not care? Do you find that others of your ethnicity expect you to speak the language already? How do they react when they hear you struggle to speak it, or when they learn that you were not raised speaking the language? Have others who have heard you speak ever assumed you were raised bilingual?
