There are a lot of videos on YT of polyglots supposedly studying a language for a short period of time, then going out and surprising native speakers by doing things like ordering food "fluently". How do they do this? Has anyone here ever done this?
Even after studying a language for a couple of years, I sometimes have trouble picking out individual words. Not always, but I have a hard time getting my brain to accept that what I'm listening to is an actual language and not just random sounds.
Do you just memorize the entire "At a Restaurant" section of a phrasebook and hope that the person you speak to doesn't use any obscure words?
