Mandarin for a guy with "tone issues", qù vs chī vs shi etc

I am profoundly deaf in one ear, and thus, learning the tones of Mandarin as a new learner has sometimes been a challenge.

For those of you like myself, it is solely an issue of context in which to distinguish some words, or, am I the only one mishearing similar pronounced Mandarin words?

If I am reading pinyin, my ability to understand the sentences is exponentially better than when I hear it spoken.

Any advice for those who suffer from a similar malady when learning Chinese?
