How often should I use "learn new words" on Memrise to learn effectively?

I'm learning Spanish on Memrise using the official courses, and it feels like I'm learning way slower than recommended. I use the suggested sessions, and typically in a one hour session Memrise recommends I learn new words once or twice, and spend the rest of my time grinding words I know. This would put me at about 4 words/hour and 100 hours to finish course 1. What's a more reasonable way to use it?
