How many words do you really need to know to be literally the same as an educated native speaker?

There is one thought that bothers me. The average native speaker knows tens of thousands of words. This is a monstrous number. I want to emigrate, but I'm afraid to always be a second-class person who always doesn't understand something and therefore is worse than others.

Maybe you don't have an answer to this question, but there is something that will make me stop being nervous.

Perhaps you are aware of studies or books on this topic.
