Do you learn Japanese Hiragana and Katakana like you learned the alphabet?

For example, when you learned A, B and C. You would write A and say that this is a. Write B, this is b.

Should I do the same with Japanese alphabet. Like this

あ = a

い = i

etc...

Until I know every character by heart?
