Language classes, an invention or necessity?

I see that some polyglots or linguists say that language classes aren’t necessary if you want to learn a language bc, you could develop a “dependence” to classes and probably these schools of courses make the learning path really large than actually is, and sometimes the investment in classes doesn’t worth it. PD: I asking this question bc I want to learn a language by myself for work purposes
