Any advantage to ‘not translating’?

Hi, I am trying to read some transcripts in my target language. My habit is to try and translate into english as I go in order to get the meaning but it occurred to me that it might be better to try and just think about the meaning of the words as I read them in the other language and bypass English entirely if this makes sense (not sure how to describe it!)

My idea is that this avoids the lag of having to translate and could also help me get better in thinking in my TL. Right now though it feels strange and unnatural doing this but I wonder if I persevere that there could be benefits. Is this the case?
