People who have learned languages from similar previously learned languages, how effective was it?

I've heard from a few polyglots on YouTube the idea of learning a language by using another language you learned that was similar to it. They said it helped them a lot. Like using spanish to learn portuguese, korean to learn japanese... Kind of like this. So has any of you tried this and can confirm?
