Looking for basic consulting for strategic language learning (Mandarin, Portuguese, Arabic, Russian)? What level is needed to keep track of politics? (MILDLY POLITICAL)
Hi all!
First time poster.
I spent much of my late teens and early 20s learning Romance based languages (Native English, Fluent French, Intermediate Italian and Spanish, Beginner Portuguese and German).
I've since relaxed on the language learning, but have gotten a clearer vision for how I want to spend the next 10-20 years, as well as a way to integrate language learning into this purpose.
In short, I want to track politics on an international scale, as well as use tech and language bots to keep tabs on international politics / geopolitics. My interest has been towards the... let's say... rough and tumble types of political figures. The strongmen, so to speak.
These languages lend towards Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, Arabic, and maybe another one or two.
Sure, there is good documentation on what they do, written in English, but nothing would beat understanding what the President in Russia is saying, or reading a Brazilian government statement straight from their website. Same logic goes towards building technology to keep track of these things.
With that said, what level of fluency, as per the European Framework of Languages (A1 - C2) and level of vocabulary, would I need to comfortably understand and analyze:
- Politician's speeches
- Parlimentary arguments
- Informal debates
- News broadcasts, as given by news anchors or radio personalities
- Government resources
- White papers and reports?
For those who speak several of these languages, have you noticed a difference in the degree of difficulty in dealing with these topics?
Partial responses welcomed! (For example, if you know one aspect of one language).
Thanks!
