When native-German speakers speak English, I often hear them use “already” in a place where a native English speaker never would.
For example:
There’s a number of ways to do it. The indicators you can look at are, first of all, the energy performance certificates that you have in the UK. They were introduced by the European Union already in 2002.
Can a German speaker tell me what is being translated here? Is it that German uses a pluperfect where English uses a perfect-tense verb?
(I’m absolutely not being critical of this particular speaker. I’ve heard this quirk many times over the years and never figured out where it comes from.)
