How to study words so that they stick in your head?

Hello, I want to learn Russian and be able to speak it after a few years of self study.

Russian grammar is very simple to me since I am from Poland. We have a very similar grammar.

So... how would you go about learning words?

I am not studying for an exam, I want them to stick around for as long as possible and be able to comprehend more spoken/written words.

I will use that knowledge to watch movies and go thru IG so they stick around. Then eventually I will go there to practice in a few years.
