At what point does learning a new language not potentially sabotage progress on another language?

When you've been learning a language for a while with some commitment, at what point do you feel willing to sacrifice potential study time for that language to start learning a new one? I understand the importance of getting to a place where you can integrate language familiarity in a routinized way - such as conversation, reading newspapers in the target language, watching movies, etc - but do you ever feel like pulling back on study to start a new language can be a setback?
