I hate how much work it takes to reach a really easy "maintenance level"

Does anyone else feel the same way? My Chinese is currently at a level where I can do the absolute bare-minimum (aka nothing I wouldn't ordinarily do) to keep my base level abilities pretty strong. I love this feeling and I love how it frees up a lot more free time, which was previously spent learning the language. Now that I've moved onto Japanese and Russian, I've made this level of 'ability' my end-game goal. But getting there has been such an battle at times that I really hate it all over again, despite having done it once. In fact, it makes me proud of myself to have done it once.
