English natives, how was it explained to you the diferences between "ser" and "estar"?

This works either if you're learning spanish or portuguese.

When I was learning english it was explained to me that every time I would use either "ser" or "estar" I would just use "to be" and that was simple to understand, but I always thought it wouldn't be that simple to explain the other way around.
