EDIT: Apologies for the misleading title; the focus of these tips is on learning a language more effectively, and not on speed. Hope they’ll help in some way!
Hey Reddit! I’d just like a few things that worked for me while I was learning a language. It’s really important to make sure that you learn effectively, because what matters is whether you RETAIN the knowledge, not how long you spend on it.
- Focus on learning the most common words, not building a word bank.
Language learning apps tend to focus on teaching vocabulary, not your understanding. But most of these words aren’t used in our daily lives, meaning that we’ll end up forgetting them.
To learn more effectively, you should focus on learning the 1000 most common words in each language first. If you actively use these words, you’ll recall them a lot more easily! I’ve linked a few that I’ve found down below.
- Don’t spend too long learning it every day, especially if you’re a beginner.
When we first start out, we’re often really excited to delve into the language. But if we spend too long on it, as we lose interest, we can’t commit the same amount of time to learning it every day. We’ll end up becoming demotivated and losing interest.
If we want to forge a language-learning habit, you should start small, e.g. just 5 minutes a day. It’s easy to find 5 minutes every day to learn a language, so you’re more likely to maintain your habit instead of giving up.
- Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.
In order to learn effectively, you should always practise conversing with locals. You might end up making a blunder, but that’s okay! What matters is that you keep trying. Be bold in asking others for help, and make more mistakes, so you can learn from them and improve.
Hope that these tips helped :) The resources are available in this article I wrote, which can help you understand how these tips work. Would appreciate it if you check it out!
All the best :)
