Doing grammar exercises is a waste of time

Please note that I refer only to grammar exercises - and not to learning grammar.

Yesterday I got involved in a discussion about the title of the post regarding beginner learners and thought it would be interesting to bring it to this lovely community.

What do you have to say?

Here are some of the questions that came up:

- To what extent do grammar exercises help us remember grammatical concepts?

- What are the benefits of doing grammar exercises beyond remembering the grammar concept?

- How is doing grammar exercises better for retention than, for example, studying the grammar concepts and then reading native texts paying attention to grammar structures — where we're likely to see such concepts in action?
