Thee apple and the banana

Hello,

I'm originally from the Detroit, Michigan area and for us, this is sort of in free-flow. Sometimes I'll pronounce the as thee before vowels and other times I'll pronounce it as the. Apparently, I've been told that it's a rule that you should pronounce the as thee for vowels, while, while for consonants it can go either way, depending on emphasis.

I'd like to know how everyone else does this. Linked is a one-question straw poll that asks that question. Should take maybe 5 seconds.

Thank you!
