How difficult would Mandarin be if you ignore the writing?

Chinese has a reputation for being one of the hardest languages to learn but I'm wondering how much of this is attributed to the writing system. In an alternate universe where the Chinese government got rid of the traditional writing system and replaced it with Pin Yin (the romanized alphabet), would Mandarin still be considered one of the hardest languages? If somebody were to try learning only spoken Mandarin and resign themselves to complete illiteracy, what language could we compare it too in terms of difficulty. Vietnamese is a very hard language regardless of the writing while Indonesian is quite simple from my experience. Would Mandarin be more comparable to Indonesian or Vietnamese? Obviously the tones are quite a hurdle at the start but compared to learning Russian with it's cases, genders and everything else that will plague you throughout your whole learning journey, spoken Mandarin seems fairly straightforward. I'm not advocating skipping the writing at all. The beauty of the Chinese script is part of what draws me to the language is the first place.
