I need help with Chinese

So ‘him’ in Chinese is 他 and ‘she’ in Chinese is 她. If they both are pronounced “Tā”, then what’s the point of them existing? Is it so when you’re reading you know the difference? Is there a way you can say he and she when you’re talking so the person knows what gender you’re talking about? Also why is it 他们 and not 她们? thanks for the help.
