Have you ever learnt a language in another country in which you didn't share any language to communicate with?

Like, I'm Finnish. If I didn't speak English and decided to move to Brazil for example. There is no way I could communicate, so how could I learn the language?

I was watching Vikings and started to wonder about how that worked when there might have been a lack of translators(machines and humans lol).
